CKSO Radio & TV – News

Officially her name was Kathryn, but she was known as Kathy. She was born in Petawawa, Ontario on December 31, 1955. As her father was a preacher, the family often moved and so Kathy grew up in Deep River, Bearbrook, North Gower and Ottawa. Leaving the Ottawa Valley area, she moved to Toronto where she studied at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and proudly graduated with a degree in Radio/Television Arts. Kathy’s first job in her chosen profession was that of a journalist with CKSO Radio and Television in Sudbury.

Within just a few years Kathy moved over to CBC Radio in Sudbury working as a producer.

Kathy eventually turned her sights to the political scene offering to aid a Sudbury City Councillor who had planned to run for a seat in the Provincial Legislature. Kathy would spend more than 25 years serving the people of Ontario as a Senior Political Staffer. She first worked with the Liberal Member of the Provincial Parliament representing Sudbury. She then took on responsibilities aiding the Liberal Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt. Finally, for a bit of a change of pace, she found herself working for a Toronto City Councillor representing Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt.

Kathy kept busy with several interests outside her career. As an avid reader, she collected a small fortune in books. Traveling around the world also brought much joy to her life. Very much family oriented, Kathy was proud of her own family and was diligently documenting and writing the Gooch/Baird family history.

Kathy passed away suddenly at her home on April 7, 2016. She was 61. As an acknowledgement of her contributions to public service, a Condolence Motion was passed by the Mayor and Members of Toronto City Council, expressing their sadness over Kathy’s death. The motion was dated May 3, 2016.
