Roy Harnish
Throughout the history of CKSO Radio and Television people from far and wide came to work at the station. Some would remain for a a short period of time, while others became household names. Others moved on to larger markets and some would eventually find themselves in career-related positions. Roy Harnish who came to Sudbury in 1965 was one of those individuals who remained for a year or two. Born February 3, 1936 in Cloquet, Minnesota where he began his broadcasting career by building a limited range station in his bedroom while in junior high school was a long way from home. His talents and ambition were soon noticed as he was recruited by the local radio station while Roy was still in high school.
Roy would become a staff member of the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis campus station WMMR and then became a co-founder and chief announcer of KUMD. In the course of his career he would make moves to several stations including CKSO AM, FM and TV as News Director. Then he served as newscaster at CKLW in Windsor, and then at CHML and CKOC in Hamilton. He then returned to the United States. At various stops along the way he continued to serve as announcer, newscaster, traffic director and talk show host. He would also serve as a reporter, photographer, film editor, assignment editor and news anchor, and an owner/publisher. He served on boards, committees and humanitarian efforts, as well as his church, community organizations and events.
Sudbury was fortunate to have had Roy Harnish, even for a short while. He died at the age of 67 on September 11, 2003.
